Following successful careers in magazines and the art world respectively, childhood friends Vanessa and Alice founded Barneby Gates in 2009. Their distinctive design aesthetic is deeply rooted in their shared upbringing. Having grown up in the English countryside and spent time in characterful country houses, they developed an instinctive understanding of how to layer patterns and textures with ease. The result is a signature style that feels effortless, balanced, and entirely uncontrived.

Our Studio Showroom
The Barneby Gates headquarters houses a showroom, design studio and warehouse under one roof, and is open to the public five days a week. Barneby Gates supplies both retail and trade clients worldwide, collaborating closely with interior designers and showrooms.
The complete collection of wallpaper, fabric and cushions is held in stock in Wiltshire, and all orders are fulfilled in-house, allowing for an extremely personal service to their global client base.
Sustainability
Are Barneby Gates wallpapers and fabrics sustainably produced?
Our wallpapers are FSC-certified and printed with non-toxic, low-VOC organic pigments — a safer, more environmentally conscious choice for your home.
Every roll begins with FSC-certified paper, tracked through a verified chain of custody from forest to factory to customer, ensuring strict environmental and traceability standards are met at every stage. Independent testing also confirms that our wallpapers meet the highest current indoor air quality standards, with emission levels among the lowest in the industry.
Our fabrics are equally considered. Printed onto Better Cotton (BCI Origin) cotton-linen cloth using Ecofast pigment printing, the process requires just 43 litres of water per metre of fabric produced. Combined with significantly lower energy consumption than conventional textile printing, Ecofast is recognised as one of the most sustainable methods of fabric printing available today.

Barneby Gates is a proud official partner of Furnishing Futures, a charity transforming empty social housing into safe, healing homes for women and children escaping domestic abuse.
Furniture poverty affects over 14 million people in the UK, with less than 2% of social housing furnished — leaving vulnerable families without essentials and deepening the cycle of debt and poverty. Meanwhile, millions of new and furniture and textile items are sent to landfill every year.
Furnishing Futures rescues these high-quality items from the interiors industry for families in need.
As part of this partnership, we supply fabric for fellow partner Remnant Revolution to turn into cushions, and host fundraising events at our Wiltshire studio — reflecting our ongoing commitment to social responsibility and sustainability.
